On Friday the 13th of May we had a day out driving around the Ring Of Hook. We had booked in to go on a tour but they were doing things with their website so we hadn’t actually been booked in. A man rang us to say that we weren’t with the group but he let us do the tour on our own. He also let us go to a light house and a castle for free. That also meant that we didn’t have to do it in four hours like they did, which was a very good thing, or we wouldn’t have been able to see everything.
We firstly went on the ferry. It was a very quick sail across the river. We even took our car across.
TINTERN ABBEY
Then we went to the Tintern Abbey. It wasn’t open yet because there were lots of builders working on it. We still had a look around though. We then had a quick look in a forest that was nearby. It had a marvellous river running through it. There were also some old ruins on the other side of the river. I found a little path on the other side so Tyler and I went exploring.
THE HOOK LIGHTHOUSE
Next we went to the Hook Light House. It is the oldest, still working light house in Europe.
While we were waiting to go on our tour of the light house we got a hot chocolate. We also had a look around the shop. Tyler liked some boats and other people liked other things but then our tour started so we had to wait until after the tour before we could but anything. The man that was our tour guide told us lots of things about each floor of the lighthouse like who lived there and what their job was. It was very fun but then the man told us that we were going up to the top so Mum told him that she had to go down. She wanted to go down because the top floor was an open floor and Mum doesn’t like to see people at the edge of high things.
When we got up and Mum got down we saw each other so Mum still freaked out. When we got down we went to the gift shop and bought some things. Tyler bought a huge boat; I bought a mini, sculptured, light house that looked like the Hook Light House and a post card and Mum bought lots of things.
ROOCHE'S PUB
Then we went to have some lunch. We had it at a place called Roches Pub. The food was really good. Tyler and I had Spaghetti bolognaise and some crab claws each. It was really good. We also had free wifi in there so we took our laptops in to send some emails, because we don’t have much wifi at all.
DUNCANNON FORT
Then we went to a place that we thought was a castle but it was really a fort; Duncannon Fort. We got a very special tour around the fort because we got to go where not many people get to go. It was amazing with all of the true amazing stories. Like how it was used in many wars, why it was built and how there was a fire. It was right on the edge of a not too high cliff. The cliff was on a beach so there was an amazing view. After our amazing tour around the fort, Mum went back to Roches Bar to get a coffee. We had a quick look in a museum thing. It had lots of old things to do with the fort. Then we said thankyou and good bye and went to find Mum.
When we found her she was still walking to the bar because she had been for a walk on the beach. Then we all went to the bar. Tyler and I got another hot chocolate and Mum got a coffee. We then went for a walk on the beach. We were allowed to drive our car right onto the beach. We found some crab claws in some mini rock pools and lots of shells. There were also people flying some really good kites. Then we got in the car and drove for 2 ¼ hours to the Cork Travelodge that we were staying in that night.
We had a great day looking at all of the marvellous sights. We loved it!
